American Idol - Season 9 - Week 3 (The Girls)

See those two young women up there? I don't think there is any doubt after this evening that these two, Crystal and Siobhan, are destined for not only the top 12, but possibly the top 4. Of course, it all depends on how America votes, but man...I absolutely LOVE both of them...while I think Crystal is probably the overall better performer, I am so smitten by Siobhan...she's cute, can really sing, and her style is unique. As Simon once said, "You're a silly little thing, aren't you?" (or something like that...)

Anyway, tonight I had the pleasure of watching Idol with some friends of mine, and they had some interesting points that I normally don't point out. For instance, is there some kind of contractual obligation to the word "Frustrated"? Does Simon get bonus points if that comes out of his mouth? And speaking of Simon, just how close can he and Kara get? It always looks like she's leaning into Simon when she gives her thoughts. Please Kara, move away from the cranky Brit....please. Besides, what would Casey say?

Tonight we're down to the final 8 girls...er, ladies. And it's refreshing to NOT have to listen to these horrible packages they put together before the performers go on. So we don't have to see contestants coloring. Or telling us things about themselves that we really don't want to know about anyway.

First up - Katie Stevens, who sings "Breakaway" by Kelly Clarkson. One of my friends walked in while she was performing and asked why Selena Gomez was taking part in this year's Idol? Good old Katie...well, YOUNG Katie. She sounds kind of flat for most of the song, and I'm bored by it. I was waiting for the moment to kick in and it just doesn't happen. That's not to say she's BAD - just didn't really do the song justice (I mean, Kelly Clarkson is Idol royalty, so you better BRING IT!!) Randy thought the song was too big for her - it paled in comparison to the original. He "didn't get it". Ellen (more on her later) didn't feel that Katie "felt" the song. No personality. Good job Ellen - very true. Kara said Katie has a great radio voice, but that she doesn't know who she is as an artist. Simon (who as mentioned earlier, is practically on top of Kara) said that Katie IS listening to them, and appreciates her trying. But the song was gloomy, and he actually says she sucked! Well, sucked the life out of the song...but still, it was jarring hearing him say that! Post song, Katie explains that she was 8 years old when Kelly Clarkson won Idol (in contrast, I was 31...). My prediction? She stays and makes the top 12. It wasn't that bad, and I think she has a good enough fan base to keep her around.

We go to a commercial, and I hear a really cool song from, of all places, a Diet Coke commercial - I look it up and it's called "Sweet Disposition" by The Temper Trap. I'm kicking myself because that album was the Amazon deal of the day the other day! Reminds me of hearing "So Here We Are" by Bloc Party in a Saturn Commercial, or "We've Been Had" by the Walkmen (also for Saturn), years ago. Good tune. Sorry I missed picking that album up on the cheap. Darn it...oh well. Moving on.

Next up is Siobhan Magnus. I can't wait to hear what she's going to sing - I'm giddy inside! Siobhan's dad is in the audience and reminds me of Brian Johnson from AC/DC. Turns out he's a singer, and he used to sing "House Of The Rising Sun" by The Animals (which, by the way, I also picked up on Amazon's Deal of the Day a while back...but I digress...). So Siobhan is going to sing it for her dad who is in the audience with his Brian Johnson-looking hat and hair. The song starts out very slow, and I'm a little concerned...but really, I should learn by now. Siobhan just brings it EVERY week. And by the time the song is over, I'm blown away again by her pipes. I can't stop looking at that nose ring...and I normally don't like nose rings. Um...anyway, she's got a truly beautiful voice, and I will be royally upset...no, pissed, if she's not here next week. Rather than have me turn this Blog from "Mort's Musings" to "Mort's Love of Siobhan", I'll go to the judges. Randy loves what she does - he said she was HOT! Ellen says she knows that house! She says that Siobhan is why she loves music - it moved her. She calls her spectacular (yes she is Ellen!!) Kara said it was a brilliant choice, and calls her unique and different (so true!). Simon isn't so enamored - he said she didn't do anything with the song, and was under impressed by her "boring, dark" song. BOOOOO Simon. You're wrong dude. My prediction? Mort continues to write his blog because Siobhah makes the top 12. She'll be here next week.

Next up - Lacey Brown. I really want to give this girl another chance, but within the first few seconds of Brandi Carlisle's "The Story", I know this is going to be rough. I thought she did a good job during one song in Hollywood, but that's about it. I'm not sure how to describe Lacey other than to talk about that flaming red hair. She just isn't a very good singer in my opinion - a little too out there, similar to two or three of the other girls who are also "out there". I didn't like this song at all, but then again, I haven't liked anything she's sung since that one song in Hollywood. Randy said while it was boring, it was her best in a while. He liked the way her voice broke up. Ellen agreed - best performance from her so far. Kara said it was effortless (and she means that in a good way), and this is the kind of record she should be doing. Simon didn't love it, but said she sang it really well. I must not be hearing the same thing those 4 are listening to. Either that, or they are spiking those Coke cups with something other than Coke. My prediction is she goes this week. The only thing that makes me doubt that is the judges verbal love for Lacey - could I just be flat out wrong?

Katelyn Epperly sings Carole King's "I Feel The Earth Move" while standing in front of a keyboard. The first thing you notice about Katelyn is her humongous hair, which has a purple glow to it based on the lighting. She's also wearing an outfit that looks like it comes out of a 70's sitcom. Paging Mork and Mindy...Kroft Superstars. Oh, yeah, her singing. It's good, but boring. I didn't really feel any emotion there - again, it's not bad (similar to Katie), but it isn't something I'll remember (wow, I feel like Simon...next I'm going to be telling her she'll be appearing at a night club lounge taking requests from 50 year olds...). And I didn't see the point of her playing the keyboard. Randy likes her hair, but didn't feel the vibe. Felt put on and not special at all. One of my friends points out that Ellen's neck doesn't match her face. In other words, she's had some work done. Regardless, Ellen didn't think it was a good song to wow people. Kara said it didn't feel like she was competing this week. Simon likes her hair. He said it was kind of like request night at a restaurant that she is working at, and she sings it OK, but nothing special. Not the song to sing when you're fighting for your life. My prediction? Well, after thinking about it, maybe Katelyn is one of the two to go this week rather than Lacey. Hmmmm......I'd much rather have Katelyn around than Lacey, but I think American might go with the judges. We'll see.

Didi Benami sings "Rhiannon" by Fleetwood Mac. Taking on Stevie Nicks isn't easy, but after listening to this about 3 times, I actually like it. I didn't care for it the first time, but unlike Lacey (sorry, I'm not pickin' on you Lace!), this grows on me. I kinda dig Didi, although I think after a while I may get sick of listening to her. I don't know - but I also didn't think she was bad last week (the judges HATED her last week). Randy said it was much better than last week, even though it didn't have any wow moments. Ellen likes Didi's spunk - the fact that she got back up and came back this evening and did well. Good job. Kara said it was one of her favorite moments of the show this season. She was surprised at how she made this song her own. Simon agreed with Kara - he said it was head and shoulders above anything they've heard tonight (Um...no Simon, it was good, but c'mon...) I think Didi will stick around and make the top 12.

Paige Miles sings "Smile" (made famous by Nat King Cole, I think??). Paige is way off tonight - I am really surprised, because I thought she had a nice voice, but she's pitchy and all over the place. Just when she hits a good note, she hits two bad notes. Definitely not the right song choice, and I really didn't like it at all. Painful at times!! Randy said that song is one of his favorites, but she didn't do it justice. Said he felt like he was at a banquet and wanted to know what everyone was having for dinner. Wha???? Ellen didn't like it - not the right song to wow us. Kara agreed with Randy and Ellen. It was "all wrong". Paige tries to explain what went wrong, but ends up making no sense whatsoever. Simon said it was a horrible choice of a song, and the arrangement was awful. He said this was a "peanut performance" because normally people are at a bar eating peanuts, listening to that type of song. Uh oh - Simon says it could be the end of the road. That spells certain doom - I predict Paige is gone this week. Book it!!

Good LORD this is a long review!!! Oy vey... OK, I'll try to speed it up, but CRYSTAL is up next! And wow, they are selling Shrimp at Taco Bell? I don't know about that....

OK, Crystal Bowersox - my girl (next to Siobhan)...she sings Tracy Chapman's "Gimme One Reason". Wow. Just flat out WOW. Even better than Siobhan's performance tonight. Just a true professional. And yes, I keep looking at the teeth, but really, who cares? She can SING. SIIIIIING!!!!! I really will be shocked if she doesn't make the top 4, and to be honest, at the rate she's going, I can see her winning it all. There are always contestants who just have "it". I feel like Crystal is one of those performers. She's ready to sing NOW and record NOW. Great job Crystal! The judges all love her - Randy loved it all. He's a big fan, and it was "hot". Ellen needs to come up with new adjectives for her. Best of the night. Kara said it's easy for her, and can see what type of record she's going to be making (Kara is obsessed with what kind of records people are going to make). Simon said she was easily the best and she's the one to beat. She has the confidence. Go Crystal!!!

Lily Scott finishes the show with "I Fall To Pieces" by Patsy Cline. Lilly is the space cadet sandwich maker who is so different...so unique. Yes, I am getting tired of hearing her over enunciate everything, and trail off her notes. Listen, I'm just getting tired so I'm going to wrap this up quick. Randy, Ellen, and Kara loved it. Simon thought it was good, but risky...didn't have the "Wow Factor" (another cliche!!). Again, like Lacey, I don't get her, but the judges seem to think she could make it. So we'll see. I predict she says this week.

So my two girls to go are Lacey/Katelyn (one of them) and Paige. Although I could also see Katie going possibly as maybe her fan base isn't as strong as I think. Two who will NOT be going are at the top of this blog posting. Siobhan and Crystal, keep up the great work!

American Idol - Season 9 - Week 2 (The Girls)

OK - you know the drill, I listen to these people, and give you my thoughts...so here goes!

First up is my favorite...

Crystal Bowersox - Crystal made headlines because she was apparently hospitalized overnight, and they ended up switching the guys and girls this week (guys went first this week). Hope she's feeling better! Anyway, tonight she sings CCR's "As Long As I Can See The Light". She says she's going to put a gospel spin on it...hmmmmm....this could be bad. But it's not - in fact, I think she's amazing tonight. Her voice has such a quality to it - I'm telling you now, this girl will be in the top 3 or 4 this year. She is awesome!! Randy says that she's true to herself, and that he loves her! (Me too Randy!!) Ellen says she's got pure, raw, natural talent. Kara said this song fit her perfectly. She said she hit a new level tonight. Simon said he underestimated her - said her vocal was incredible! He actually compares her to Kelly Clarkson - I can't disagree with that. Crystal so far is the one to beat...completely blows away just about all of the guys, and I really will be shocked if she's not around for a long, long time. Heck, I may download that song off of iTunes later! Is this my new Carly Smithson?? Hmmmmmm....could be!!

Haeley Vaughn - Says she's nervous tonight, and that's she's going to sing Miley Cyrus. Yes, that's right - she's singing "The Climb". During the package, we see her smiling a LOT...she's just so bubbly! So now she's going to sing a very melodramatic song - she can't smile that much during this, right? Well, I'm somewhat indifferent to this. It certainly wasn't bad, but I much prefer the original. I think she has moments when she's pushing her voice, and it at times sounds kinda strange and very pitchy. The judges HATED it. Randy said it was excruciating! He said it was so pitchy and had no connection to the song (now she's not smiling!) Ellen agrees with Randy - didn't connect to the song. Kara compares her to Alex Lambert (wow, that's a first - comparing her to an existing contestant!) She says Haeley needs a good year of vocal training, but people will root for her because they genuinely like her. Simon said it was a total and utter mess. I feel bad for Haeley....then again, when you compare her to Crystal, well you can see how far she has to go.

Lacey Brown - She takes Kara's advice from last week and sings "Kiss Me" by Sixpense None The Richer. This is not good at all. I mean, this is one of those performances that I'll be SHOCKED if a) she's still here next week, and b) if any of the judges like her this week. She still sounds nervous, and I just don't her voice at all. I do like the hair, though. But this is not a hair competition - it's a singing competition, and I don't see her lasting another week. The judges verdict? Randy said it was too Kareoke and that she didn't bring anything to it. Ellen said it was adorable - what?!? Blech...I disagree!! Kara (shocker) said the song brought out her vocal styling - but that she has to step it up. Simon said it was marginally better than last week. I just didn't get it. Still no one close to Crystal so far. C'mon ladies! It has to get better than this, right?

Katie Stevens - The adorable Katie tells us she can say "Give Me A Kiss" in 6 languages. Um...OK. ANYWAY, this week she's singing "Put Your Records On". I like this song a lot, but I predict the judges won't care for her performance. I thought it was good, but not great. Definitely had a sass about her tonight - she sounded confident, and while I may be blinded a little because she's cute as a button, I still wasn't blown away. I think she does have potential, though. She had some nice moments. Randy agreed - he said there were some good moments. Ellen wants to see her "younger" - said it sounds like something she'd hear at the dentist office. Kara is frustrated with Katie - didn't think she opened up enough until the end of the song. Simon said she's not telling us what kind of artist she wants to be, but thinks she'll stay around another week. BTW, Ryan - ENOUGH with the Justin Bieber comments! That's two night in a row!

Didi Benami - She tells us she "Meows" before she goes out to perform. Bizarre. She's going to take on "Lean On Me". When she started, I was very scared. She sounded flat. But then she really picked it up and I ended up really liking this version! It had some awkward moments, but I did like it overall. Randy said he wouldn't have chose that type of song - didn't like it. Ellen loves her voice, BUT she didn't like the song choice. Kara said it wasn't good. Said it was all over the place. Simon said it was all over the place as well, and compared her to a cat screeching. I find it amazing that Simon rips into all the people when THEY are the ones who chose these people! Poor Didi - she looks devastated at the end of the song. I really didn't think it was nearly as bad as they made it out to be.

Michelle Delamor - She is going to do something unpredictable - Creed's "Arms Wide Open". Risky...will it work? In my opinion? Not really. I guess I'm so used to the original, and this one is kinda out there. Did Todrick have something to do with this? :^) For someone who is kinda in the "Diva" mold, I don't think she's that great of a singer. I was very bored by this, and the end was pretty atrocious! She even had a look on her face.... Randy liked her outfit. But he's getting frustrated - she didn't do anything with the song. Ellen thought she did do something with the song, and forgot it was a rock song at times. Said it was pitchy at times, but has a great look and she likes her voice. Kara said it her favorite performance of hers EVER. Man, I just am not agreeing with the judges tonight. Kara said she sold the song. Simon said he's with Kara (what?!?) - he liked it. He liked the fact she didn't take the safe way out, and got 80% right. She's a pretty girl, but I am not a huge fan of her overall.

Lilly Scott - Sings Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come". I think it's written somewhere as a rule that someone must do this song every season. Lilly is one different kind of performer - she's unique enough to almost pull this off. It's a little too out there for my tastes, but I can appreciate her performance. Randy calls her "Unique" (hmmmm...sound familiar!) Ellen said she has "It". Called it the best performance of the night. (Um...no....) Kara said thank god she tried out, and will change the game. She's opening doors for unique performers. Simon said it was good, but not crazy about it like the other judges. He said Crystal was stronger. I agree!

Katelyn Epperly - Immediately I see she's wearing less make up! She's singing Coldplay's "The Scientist". She's plays the piano during her performance, and looks great. Her singing? It's OK, but I'm bored by most of it. She does have a nice moment at the end, but again, list most of the performances this season, I'm not really blown away by it. It wasn't BAD, but it wasn't something I'll remember (wow, I sound like Simon!). Randy liked it, Ellen feel asleep during it, Kara said she kinda loves her, and Simon said it was a smart choice but that she has to not be corny during her performances. He also said it was a million times better than last week.

Paige Miles - We learn that she likes to color, but that she never goes outside the lines. What the...???? She's going to sing "Walkaway" by Kelly Clarkson. From a performance perspective, she has very little stage presence. But vocally, I thought for the most part, she was spot on. A couple of moments were NOT good, but I'd say about 90% of that I liked. Randy liked it - didn't love it, though. Didn't know if it was the best choice, though. Ellen disagrees - she LOVED it. She said she changed just enough to make it hers. Kara said it was good, but she wanted her to connect to the song more. Simon agreed with Randy - she chose the wrong song. She needs to nail it next week, according to Mr. Cowell.

Siobhan Magnus - One of my favorites is saved for last. OMG - we see some photos of her with a Mohawk! She also does lip drills. OMG - she's going to do Aretha's "Think"....I am practically GIDDY with excitement...please Siobhan. Don't let me down!! Who are we kidding? This girl can't disappoint me. Wow, just like last night, I think the best singers were first and last. I really like this girl and I'm going to vote for her tonight. Yup - you heard it here. Big fan...GOOD LORD, those pipes! And she's pretty darn adorable, too. So...um, yeah. I like her. The judges? Randy LOVED IT. Said she slayed it! In a good way....Ellen loved it too. Kara loved it too. Simon said she's strange, but was uneven. But that one note was amazing, and that she's interesting.

American Idol - Season 9 - Week 2 (The Guys)

Hey everyone...I want to apologize for not doing a write up on the guys last night, but I had a meeting that lasted until 9, then I had to watch Lost (is that show getting better or what? Still no real answers, but I'm enjoying the ride!) I'll review tonight's girl performances shortly, but first, here is a recap of last night's performances.

Michael Lynche - Big Mike tore it up tonight with his cover of James Brown's "It's a Man's World". He sounded good, and didn't go off the rails like some previous contestants. Showed another side of him, which was good! Thumbs up!!

John Park - He sings "Gravity" by John Mayer. Better than last week, but I just don't see him as the next Idol. Nice voice, but zero personality. I was bored by most of this. Again, better than last week, but giving how little I enjoyed last week, that's not saying much! Thumbs indifferent.

Casey James - Does a great job on the guitar, and a good (but not great) job vocally with "I Don't Wanna Be" (or whatever that song is called...). I think if you isolated his voice, it wouldn't be as good as he's been in the past. And his guitar actually detracted from his singing - again, I was impressed with his guitar playing, but I don't think he's that type of singer and that's not really his type of song. Not bad, but retains his status as one of my favorites. Thumbs up (but not as much as Big Mike!)

Alex Lambert - Covers a John Legend tune. I have mixed feeling on this guy. On one hand, he seems so freakin' nervous up there. And most of the time, I don't find his vocal style to my liking. But there is a quality in his vocals that appear from time to time, and I think he COULD be better than he is showing. But again, like John, I just don't see him as the next Idol. I think with more experience, he could improve dramatically. Thumbs indifferent.

Todrick Hall - Does a cover of Tina Turner's "What's Love Got To Do With It". Nowhere near as much of a train wreck that "Since U Been Gone" was last week, but I just shrugged my shoulders when I heard it. His voice isn't bad, but I was bored by it. I think this guy is better than this, but I wouldn't be surprised if he leaves this week. I agree with the judges - you don't have to rearrange every song!! Just sing it, dude!! Thumbs down.

Jermaine Sellers - OMG - during the package before he sings, we see him rockin' his onesie...wha??? Anyway, this guy is a little kookie. He proceeds to slay Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On?" And I don't mean that in a good way. Like so many of these guys, I can hear occasionally in his voice a nice tone, but more often than not, he's extremely pitchy. And I just wasn't into this song. The guys so far are not really bringing it tonight. Thumbs down.

Andrew Garcia - Sings James Morrison's "You Give Me Something". I was extremely disappointed in Andrew tonight (and last week). The judges keep bringing up "Straight Up", and while it may be unfair, his version of that was awesome. He hasn't lived up to it since. He does have a good voice, I just think he needs to pick the right songs. I really couldn't stand this performance tonight - not good. I hope he's around next week, because this is a guy from Hollywood I thought had potential, and I still think he has it. Thumbs down.

Aaron Kelly - He sings "My Girl" and I actually quite enjoyed it. He's more confident this week, and I predict that he will get better and better. He's only 16, and like someone like Clay Aiken before him, I wouldn't be surprised if a month from now he is a completely different and more mature singer. I predict this - I think he stays around, and don't be surprised if he has a showstopper performance in him. Not quite there yet, but he's on the road to it. Thumbs up.

Tim Urban - Dirk does a song I think I've heard before, but I don't know the title. Anyway, when I first heard it yesterday, I thought it was horrible. But then I listened to it again (and one more time for good measure), and I have to agree with Simon - he was MUCH better this week. I don't think he should have been in the top 12 guys to begin with, but I'll cut him some slack this week. Thumbs sideways - not great, but not horrible.

Lee Dewyze - They saved the best for last tonight. Lee really flew under the radar but I heard something last week, and it only got better this week. There is something about the tone of his voice that I think is special - like they said, you can imagine hearing him on the radio NOW. His version of "Lips of an Angel" was great. Big thumbs up!! I see him sticking around for a while...you know, he kinda reminds me vocally of slightly harder rocking Adam Duritz of Counting Crows.

So there you have it - my favorites were Big Mike, Casey James, Aaron Kelly and Lee Dewyze. The rest could go and I wouldn't lose any sleep.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to review TONIGHT'S episode with the ladies!

American Idol - Season 9 - Week 1 (The Guys)

Ok, so maybe this morning I'll be able to write this review of the guys in under 30 minutes - it shouldn't be hard, since not many were worth writing about. In fact, I am tempted to say we should just pick the top 12 now and move on with it. Because I don't know if we even had 3 guys tonight who I thought were really good.

I like Simon's threat tonight - "If you lose it tonight, or forget the words, your career is over..." Wow, talk about self importance! Easy there Mr. Cowell.

Anyway, here are the guys...

Todrick Hall - The dancer/singer kicks it off with a bizarre cover of Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone"...wow, don't like this at all. I agree with the judges - he changes it TOO much...so much that you can't even recognize it. And you know, I normally wouldn't care if he changed it so much IF it was good (the end result). This wasn't. I still think this guy can sing, but he didn't do it tonight. He was all over the place. The judges didn't like it either. To save some time, I'm not going to comment on individual judge comments (well, maybe a few). Anyway, overall bad grades for Todrick. I think he'll be back next week, though, and expect him to bounce back.

Aaron Kelly - The 16 year old sounds very nervous tonight (a trend that will continue). Upon a second listen, it wasn't as bad as I first found it. But again, I am not wild about the Rascall Flatts song he sings. He does have some good moments, but to me it's not consistently good. I think he has a built in fan base and he'll be back. The judges like him - Simon in particular said it was a good performance, but that Aaron needs to build up his confidence. All of the judges say that - believe in yourself, Aaron!

Jermaine Sellers - This is the guy who was accused of being a "diva" - in other words, he threw the band under the bus during Hollywood week. Tonight he sings "Get Here" by Oleta Adams (isn't that an 80's song??). I was bored to tears with this - didn't care for it (are you sensing a trend?). Like Aaron, he has a few moments here and there, but I thought it was a little over the top. The judges didn't really care for it - Simon said something to the affect that it was a song that some 80 year old person would request at a bar. Where does he come up with this stuff? I can see Jermaine in danger this week. Just a hunch.

Tim Urban - Or, Dirk Diggler as I'm going to call him. I'm serious - look it up. Anyway, this kid was sent home, and then was called back when a contestant was booted for some reason which they didn't go into. He sings "Apologize" by One Republic, and the thing I remember is that Kris Allen sang this, and sang it well. When Tim slowly walks onto the stage, the first thing you notice is very little stage presence. Then he starts singing, and you really he has an OK voice (and that's being generous, in my opinion), but his falsetto is weak. I feel like I'm watching some high school production of American Idol tonight! Anyway, the judges don't like Dirk much either - in fact, they're pretty vicious on the kid, and I all I have to say is - YOU PICKED HIM TO COME BACK!! Simon said they absolutely made the right decision initially in not bringing him through. I feel bad for the Boogie Nights star - you can see him tearing up a little. Just repeat to yourself Tim, "I'm a Star! I'm A GREAT BIG SHINING STAR!!"

Joe Munoz - Didn't hear much of Joe prior to tonight...wow, he sang Man in the Mirror...who didn't sing that song in Hollywood? He sings a Jason Mraz song, and I really don't like it. He's got a weird vibrating effect when he sings - what's that called? Whatever it is, I don't like it at all. Surprisingly, the judges say he's good. Really??? To me he sounded very nervous, although they said he's very comfortable out there. At least Simon said it was forgettable (although he says he's got potential to be a star...)

Tyler Grady - The guy who should be the lead singer of The Hives comes out and does "American Woman" by the Guess Who. This is a 70's song and Idol goes out of their way to point out how "70's" Tyler is. Yeah, he looks the part...but....well, I wasn't blown away at the vocal. And I thought this is the type of song you can really get into. I completely 100% agree with the judges - this was more style over substance. I was extremely disappointed. He has surprisingly little energy out there. Completely overrated, IMHO.

Lee Dewyze - I remember this guy briefly during Hollywood week, and wasn't that impressed. I heard a glimpse of what he COULD be, but I wasn't sure if he could continue that through onto the top 24. I was surprised he made it. So what does this power vocalist choose to sing? SNOW PATROL. Yes, that's right, he picks "Chasing Cars". Which was played on Grey's Anatomy about 250 times. To quote Randy, "Check this out..." At first, I wasn't wild about this. He had some cringe inducing moments for me. BUT, just like during Hollywood week, I hear SOMETHING there, and I think he will get better. I also think that he's way more genuine than someone like Tyler Grady. The judges like Lee, but didn't like the song choice. They actually brought up David Cook's name, and I don't think we're anywhere near there at this point. But at least he's on track - similar type of artist. Simon did like the performance, though. Thinks he'll do well. Then Lee proceeds to eat the guitar pick for some reason. Randy keeps yelling "KINGS OF LEON!" Kara wants him to do some Bad Company. Lee says he never wants to lose this feeling. Quick, someone call Hallmark!

John Park - John talks about his love of Shania Twain, and that he would marry her if he could. OK...so he sings "God Bless the Child". He starts off pretty horrible, picks it up in the middle, and finishes up somewhere in the middle. I really don't care for that song, though. And Simon nailed it - NO EMOTION at all. That's what it was. See, this song was so boring I hardly have anything to write about.

Michael Lynche - BIG MIKE. He sings "This Love", and I could have sworn I heard him singing this before, but maybe I'm wrong. Anyway, he plays the guitar, but I don't know what the purpose was, because it doesn't look like he's really playing anything. I like Mike - if he wasn't tied to that guitar, I think it would be a more effective. He also sounds like he's rushing through it, but I like his performance. Didn't blow me away, but tonight, it's one of the better ones. That's not saying much! But he should be happy with his performance. The judges like his energy. But Simon didn't care for it.

Alex Lambert - I barely remember this guy at all, but I do remember him fighting with that Mary Powers girl (which they show in the package). THIS Lambert looks like Hannah Montana's brother on her TV show. He sings James Morrisson's "Wonderful World". Holy moly - he looks terrified out there. A very wooden performance. I wasn't even wild about his vocals, although they sound better the second time listening to it. I like when he sings, "Me.....eeeeee....." I am telling you - that's Jason Earles, right? Ellen makes a comment about him rockin' the mullet (see, Billy Ray connection). Judges didn't like the performance, but they like his voice.

Casey James - This is the dude that Kara is in love with. I always thought that was amusing, but it obscures the fact that this guy is a REALLY good singer, in my opinion. I think his looks tend to get in the way, so to speak. He sings "Heaven" by Bryan Adams, and I think it's easily the best performance of the night. He has some pitchy-ness at times, BUT overall, he's got a very nice tone to his voice. And I'm amazed that he didn't crack up while Kara was waving her arms back and forth during his performance. She goes goo goo ga ga over him while giving her review - she really does have the hots for this guy! And she reminds us she's married... Ellen says that she heard Kara undressing Casey with her eyes. LOL. I will say this about Kara - she is way more attractive this year...either that, or maybe I'm just noticing. Or maybe it was the bikini from last year. Anyway, they'd make a good looking couple, that Kara and Casey! Seriously, they all liked him and assure him he has no problem getting votes (and Kara's number).

Andrew Garcia - This is the guy who sang "Straight Up" by Paula Abdul, and I'll never forget that performance. It was great, and before the night began, I thought they were saving the best two guys for last. Andrew sings "Sugar We're Going Down" by Fall Out Boy. He does this acoustically - which is what he did with "Straight Up". That worked - I don't know if this did or not, because I really don't know this song. I liked it OK, but mostly because I like Andrew's voice and think he'll go far. Tonight the guys were not very good, and along with Casey, I think Andrew clearly was near the top (like I predicted). The judges didn't like it - but it's not the first time I disagreed with them. I think AG will be around for a while.

So there you have it...Andrew, Casey and perhaps Michael and Lee were the top performers in my eye. The rest? Blech...So I had 7 good girl performances, and 4 good guy performances...that's 11. Can we just go with that and start the weekly coed performances? :^)

OK, I'm going to sleep now...I have no clue who is going home, but I'll pick 2 of these 3: Jermaine, Joe or John will go home. We'll find out in a few hours... :^)

American Idol - Season 9 - Week 1 (The Girls)

Ok, I'm going to set a record this evening...er, MORNING. I just finished working on my taxes, and I'm a little tired. And it's 12:37 am as I start to write this and I have a training class tomorrow. SOOOOO, without further adoooo (yes, I know I spelled that wrong), here are my BRIEF thoughts. Sorry, I'll try to be more detailed with the guys tomorrow. I just don't have the energy to write a lot this evening!! You'll see...I'll be brief. Very few smarmy (or is it snarky?) comments. Well, maybe one or two...

Paige Miles - I honestly have never seen this woman before. Did they show her at all during Hollywood week? Anyway, she kicks off Idol 2010 with "Alright Now" by Free. I don't think it's alright now, Paige (sorry, snarky comment #1...I don't even know what that means...) She shouts a lot, and overall I'm left wondering why the judges put her through. I mean, she has a big final note, but that was it? Eh...I wasn't a fan. Simon says she has the best voice? Huh??? Is he already thinking about his retirement from the show? Then he compared her to a wedding singer. Cara liked her choice of the song...said she "slayed" the verses but coulda done more with the chorus. Said she had a ridiculous voice. Randy said the song showcased her powerful pipes. Ellen agreed and disagreed with them. Whatever that means. She liked just about everything about Paige. So my first disagreement with the judges - I didn't get it.

Ashley Rodriguez - Another woman I've never seen before. She sings "Happy" by Leona Lewis. I have never heard the original (I know "Bleeding Love" - does that count!?!?) I think that the song is lousy doesn't help her. I think she's pitchy - way all over the place, and did I mention this is a horrible song? And short too! Which I guess I should be grateful for. Didn't like it - NEXT!! Cara said it's a big song to take on. Some nice moments...BUT definitely moments not so great. She wants her to pick songs we wouldn't expect. Randy agrees with Cara (Says that Leona is "Simon's Girl"....) Ellen said it's a great song (wha?????) Ellen wants more, though. Simon said it was clumsy and didn't like the arrangement. AND the first time Simon says, "And if I can be honest with you..." Simon - you're ALWAYS honest with us...rut roh...he said the dreaded "I think you're in trouble" curse...she's gone!! Trust me...if Simon says so, it's true.

Janell Wheeler - I find this girl cute. Let me just get that out there right up front. I HAVE seen and heard her before. I had mixed feelings about her going into tonight...regarding her voice, that is. So...she picks "What About Love" by Heart. I know this song...sounds like she's rushing it a bit at first. I think this song is way too big for her. And maybe she can sing stuff like this, but I am not hearing it tonight. Almost sounds like a Karaoke singer up there. Not impressed. Again, she's cute, but wow, at the end, she is SHAKING!! SUPER NERVOUS!!!! Randy said bad song choice, although he still likes her. Ellen liked the song choice and thought she did well. A few bad moments, but she liked it. Simon said she gave it a 100% effort, and only came through 65%. Said she was off key, but there were moments that he did like. He predicts survival. Kara agrees with me - the song is "too big" for her. I should be up there.

Lilly Scott - The sandwich artist is up next. She picks "Fixing a Hole" by The Beatles. Uh oh. Now, I know this song very well. It's on Sgt. Pepper. I have no idea why she picked this. Look, I like this girl - but I wasn't wild about the song choice. She's trying to make it her own, but I don't get it. And another thing - she really doesn't need that guitar up there. Not impressed with this one - I hope she returns, because I like her. But just not tonight's performance. Ellen liked it - said her voice is very distinctive. Unique. Simon said the best we've heard before. Said she sang it because she liked it, rather than just picking something that she thinks they'd like. Not sensing star power...yet.... Kara says she's believable. Everyone will remember her. Randy said she's a real "indie" artist. Compares her to Duffy.

Katelyn Epperly - Another cutie...did I just say that? This girl looks like she could be on a soap opera. Like Janell - I am on the fence with this girl up to this point. So she sings "Oh Darlin" by The Beatles. I liked it. Didn't blow me away, but I definitely liked it. The only performance I really cared for from beginning to end. Simon agrees with me - he liked it, although he said she'll need a lot of work. Kara liked it too. She doesn't like her look, though. (I agree with her, by the way...too much makeup...although the outfit is nice...) Randy liked the whole vibe. Ellen was impressed overall - just felt she was pushing too hard at times. Anyway, I thought she did a good job. Awkward moment of the night - Kara said that Katelyn thought that she was a "BITCH"...wha????

Haeley Vaughn - She picks the 3rd Beatles song of the night - this time, it's "I Wanna Hold Your Hand". Again, with the guitar - why do these people feel they need to play an instrument up there? Now, I heard this twice - when I heard it the first time, I HATED IT....but when I listened back a second time, I didn't mind it as bad. There were some moments that were not quite good at all, but I think if I was in the audience, it may have sounded better than it did coming over the TV. I don't know. Kara said there were some technical issues...but she could sense Haeley's sense of fun. Just has to work on her technical abilities. Randy - said she's unpredictable...but agrees with Kara. When she tries to hit the high notes, it doesn't quite work. Ellen enjoyed it. Simon said it was "verging on terrible"...like a "wind up doll that never stopped smiling"...a "complete and utter mess". I would suggest Simon listen to it a second time like I did.

Lacey Brown - I just realized I'm not being brief...ugh. Anyway, this girl's got cool, 80's rocker hair. And I did like her performance during Hollywood. But let me tell you - listening to her try to sing "Landslide" by Fleetwood Mac. Ugh. Just unlistenable. I knew right away. The way she phrased the word "DOWN"....OMG. Just awful. And I don't want to be mean, because I know it takes a lot to get up there, and just to make it that far. And I can't sing. But wow. I had to fast forward it to the end. Then I felt guilty, went back and listened again, and yup...still didn't like it. OK last note, but that was about it. And cool hair. Randy said it wasn't the right song - in fact, he called it "terrible". Ellen said she thinks she's better than that. Simon said it was depressing and indulgent. Kara said normally she hits those notes, but not tonight. Bad song choice - then she suggests she do something like Sixpense None The Richer or THE SUNDAYS! Wow, I'd like to see a Sundays song performed on Idol. Simon said she has nice eyes. Great shot of Simon looking bored when she is talking about her performance.

Michelle Delamor - Don't know this young lady either. Don't recall hearing her sing prior to tonight. She takes on Alicia Keys' "Fallin'". I would call this a competent performance - didn't love it, didn't hate it. It was OK, and you know tonight, with these performances, that may be enough! She looks nervous out there too. Ellen said it was fantastic, but safe. Can do even better if she tries. Simon said it was very professional, but wasn't wowed. Kara said it was uneven - and you can't be uneven when you're trying to be the "diva". But she liked it overall. Randy said it was pretty good, and she has more in her and should take more risks.

Didi Benami - I swear, this girl could room with Brooke White on an Idol All Star tour. I like her as a performer and look forward to hearing her tonight. She sings "The Way I Am" by Ingrid Michaelson (??). This reminds me of Megan Corkrey. I haven't heard the original, so I can't really compare this. I thought it had good moments and some bad moments, but overall, it wasn't bad. Wow, I'm STILL not blown away by anyone. Simon said she's good, but there are too many people trying to sound like Adele and Duffy. He said he's missing a spark. I agree! Kara agrees and disagrees - likes the song, and she made changes to the original to make it her own. But it was pitchy. Randy is looking for the star factor, and doesn't see it at this point. Too sleepy. Ellen agrees - nice voice, good look, but first impression was too low key.

Siobhan Magnus - Now, let me get this out of the way. I dig her name, I dig her look (80's!!) and I think she's very cute in a unique way. She sings Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game", which is to me one of those songs you probably shouldn't touch. But like Haeley earlier, I went back and listened to this a second time, and liked it a lot more. I think she's got some powerful pipes, and really just needs to pick the right song. In the end, I quite liked it. But wasn't crazy nutty over it. But I enjoyed it. I like Siobhan - Kara refers to her as quirky, and that's exactly why I dig her. Randy thought she has a great voice, and deserved a bigger song. Ellen loved it - great choice. REALLY liked it. Simon said she's a funny little thing - didn't love it but didn't hate it either. Very dark song - then makes a comment about her blowing glass at her job. Anyway, call me a fan of hers. Did I mention I find her really cute? Yeah, I know I'm older. :^)

Crystal Bowersox - Ok, here we go. The one performer I couldn't wait to hear. This girl BLEW me away on every performance I heard from her. I predicted last week great things from her. Tonight she sings "Hand In My Pocket" by Alanis Morrissette. She not only plays the guitar, but she's got the harmonica going too. As soon as she begins, I start to smile. I also notice someone must have helped her out with the bleached teeth! Whatever - this girl is authentic, can really sing, and I just love everything about her so far. My clear favorite as a performer. She did nothing tonight to change my mind - I'm a huge Crystal fan. Randy said he loves her originality and honesty. Said it didn't matter what she sang - he likes her. Big fan, like Mort. Ellen is a big fan too. Very happy with that performance. Simon said it was good, but then said there are thousands like her playing in subway stations. Not original. Said she was too sound alike. I completely disagree with him. He suggests David Bowie...he also calls her refreshing and says she'll do well. Kara said she sees greatness in her, but just didn't see that tonight. It was good, but she wants more. Don't just be a coffee house performer. She says no doubt she'll be back next week.

Katie Stevens - Cute as a button...listen, I won't be saying this tomorrow night when the guys perform, so don't give me any crap for it while you read this! What can I say...anyway, she sings "Feelin' Good" by Nina Simone (that's who I associate the song with, not Michael Buble). I think Adam Lambert did this last year, and it's becoming an Idol standard! I first heard the song in the movie "Point of No Return"....anyway, I digress. I thought at times this song was too much for her, but then she just shut me right up. I was very impressed - did I mention she's cute as a button? Yeah, I liked her performance. Good job Katie! Ellen said it was good, but the song was very conservative. She wants to see her be 17 - sing something modern. I kinda saw that too, but I didn't really care about... Simon just RIPS into her, saying that her mom and dad dressed her up and told her to sing that. I hate when they say that stuff!! She can sing what she wants. Kara said she was all over the place...and the says she has REDONKULOUS chops (well, she said ridiculous, but you know what I meant). Randy said she reminds him of Jordan Sparks, but that she should pick stuff that is more age appropriate. I disagree, even if Katie agrees with them.

So let me tell you, I was impressed with Katelyn, Haeley, Siobhan, CRYSTAL, and Katie. I really didn't care for (and this is an understatement) Lacey, and think she's going to go. I am not sure if they get rid of 2 girls and 2 guys this week. If so, I'll say that Ashley goes as well since Simon cursed her. :^)

OK, so I finish up nearly 90 minutes later...I gotta go to bed! Hopefully I get an earlier start tomorrow night. Er, TONIGHT.... See ya later!!!

American Idol - Season 9 truly begins...

I'm back kids. Here to give you my thoughts about this year's crop of American Idol wannabes. I did get some positive feedback from last year's writings (either that, or you didn't want to hurt my feelings), so I figured I'd give it another go. So let's get on with it, shall we?

Let me first start by saying that there were a few that DIDN'T make it that I genuinely liked. And there were some in the top 24 who I'm still scratching my head about. Part of the problem with a show like American Idol is that they never just show you all the contestants - they pick and choose certain ones to highlight, and thus when we get to this point, there are certain people I have no idea if they can sing or not. The first time I'm seeing them in Hollywood week. I really think I need to start flying out to Cali to attend these auditions in person so I can really get the true experience. Alas, that isn't happening, so I'll just have to go on what I see on the TV.

Here are some that I'm kinda bummed didn't make it:

Tasha Layton - She was the worship pastor who auditioned in LA. I thought her voice as great, and was shocked she didn't make it through. Maybe it was their though of her as not having star power.

Mary Powers - She was the "older rock chick" - sure she was a little cocky, but I looked at that as confidence. I thought she would have made the show more interesting. Although I didn't care for her "Hot and Cold" rendition.

By the way, if I hear "Man in the Mirror" one more time...enough! rip MJ...BUT ENOUGH!

Shelby Dressel - I was disappointed in her leaving. I think she came a long way from when we first saw her, and I've NEVER heard anyone do "More Than a Feeling" on the show before (and did it well!). Good luck Shelby...

OK, and while I'm at it, can I just say that Jessica Furney's rejection was painful to watch. I appreciate her determination, but the judges made a decision. It's OK to be upset, but she just wouldn't leave. I had to fast forward past it.

ANYWAY, here are my brief thoughts on all who made it through, then I'll tell you my top guys and top girls, and who I think will be better this year.

Michael Lynche - "Big Mike"...I liked his version of "Waiting on the World to Change" much better than his version of "I'm Yours", but I agreed with this decision. He's got charisma and can sing.

Katelyn Epperly - Cute girl, and my wife likes her hair. Indifferent on her. Wasn't blown away. Hoping she proves me wrong.

Didi Benami - Solid singer. Could be this year's Brooke White?

Casey James - I'm sensing a little bit of cockiness on his part, but I really like this guy's voice. I called him pretty early on as making it through to the top 24 - that was too easy. Plus, Kara digs him. :^)

Aaron Kelly - While he did have a good performance (can't remember the song, though!), I don't see any star presence. Granted, the kid is only 16, but there have been other 16 year olds who I felt more confident about.

Lee Dewyze - Didn't really see it on the performances, other than a few powerful moments here and there. Again, didn't wow me with anything. And very low confidence walking up to the judges.

Todrick Hall - I like this guy...he's a good singer, dancer and has a great personality. Impressed.

Janell Wheeler - Not really impressed with her voice, but certainly LOOKS the part. Cute girls with great legs too! Seems like a genuine person, as well. I think the judges see potential for her to get better, but I'm going to reserve judgement until I see a few more performances.

Tyler Grady - When I first saw him, I thought it was the lead singer of the Hives! Certainly has the rock and roll LOOK, and his voice was good, but nothing really jumped out at me. I personally wouldn't have put him through, but again, maybe he'll surprise me.

Lacey Brown - I only heard her version of "What a Wonderful World" AFTER they put her through, but I liked what I heard. So sure, why not...plus, she almost made it last year, so she's probably good enough (again, didn't hear much of her to really make a decision...)

Ashley Rodriguez - No idea about her. Again, I need to be in Hollywood so I can hear all of these performances!! Either that, or I should have paid more attention to last week's shows!! I was too busy shoveling snow and questioning whether should go into work. But I digress....

Alex Lambert - Wait, wasn't he the runner up last year? Oh, wait, that was ADAM Lambert. Again, drawing a blank on this guy. Not sure if it was that he wasn't very memorable, or I didn't pay attention well enough. We'll see...

Joe Munoz - See Alex and Ashley...I really need to brush up on this season so far!

Crystal Bowersox - I LOVE LOVE LOVE this girl...easily one of my early favorites. She has rocked every performance I've seen, and I look forward to hearing her throughout this season. Go Crystal!

Katie Stevens - Adorable girl with a nice voice. Solid choice.

Lilly Scott - Goodbye Sandwich making, hello Idol! I loved her first performance, as well as her audition. One of my favorites, "Rich Girl" notwithstanding. I like this girl a lot.

Paige Miles - No idea about her...did I miss a few shows this season so far?

Siobhan Magnus - Kinda reminds me looks wise of Demi Lovato with a little Molly Ringwald 80's fashion sense mixed in. Oh, and I enjoyed her singing as well. Girls got some pipes! Wasn't there a "Siobhan" in Bananarama? This girl just screams 80's! :^)

Michelle Delamore - Don't remember much about her, other than seeing her over and over during the telecast waiting for her results!

Jermaine Sellers - This is the guy who threw the band under the bus! And he sang "Man in the Mirror", I think.

John Park - Flip Flopped on this guy during his initial audition - didn't know if I liked his voice or not. And again, apparently I missed a show last week (or two) because I don't remember him singing in Hollywood! Grrrr.....

Haeley Vaughn - I like this girl, and I'm going to predict she will get better and better as this season goes on. Although, she has two things going against her: 1) She's 16 and that's usually a big question mark how she'll react to the pressure, and 2) those boots - gotta lose those. lol - seriously, she has potential. I think song choice will be key for her (well, that's a dumb statement - it's important for them ALL!!)

Andrew Garcia - Another one of my favorites...his rendition of "Straight Up" was awesome. Really glad that he made it!!

So that's it...wait....that's only 11 guys listed above? Did I miss someone? Now they are recapping the picks at the end credits on tonight's AI....hey! Who is that Dirk Diggler looking guy? He made it? I don't recall seeing him make it. Tim Urban? And wait! STOP THE PRESSES!! When AI takes a wide shot of the guys, it doesn't appear that Tim Urban/Dirk Diggler is there, but this other guy (who I can't remember his name, but he bounced around from foster home to foster home as a kid...) IS there! But there is no mention of him when Seacrest reads the names...hmmmm...did someone already get kicked off and he's filling in? Or was he (orphanage guy) there originally, but REPLACED by Dirk Diggler look alike? I'm so confused...

Quick update - apparently, he was chosen, but then kicked off because he didn't disclose a prior contract?

With that, I'll TRY to pick my top singers, although it's clearly evident that I haven't watched enough of the show this season to know all the players. But based on who I saw, these are the ones I like:

American Idol Season 8 - Final Performance Night!

Welcome to (finally) American Idol's Season Finale! In this corner, the golden boy...the chosen one...the judges favorite of all time...Adam Lambert! He of the famous shriek, and the solo cover on Entertainment Weekly. America loves this guy. Women and Men alike are not sure if he's available. But really, who cares...

And in this corner, Daaaaaaaanny Gokey!! The D-Goke...The Gokester....the one whose wife passed away and people blame him when it was Idol's producers who made a point to play that up. Danny has got a unique voice, although some consider him cheesy. I really like him and hope he wins the whole thing.

Wait, what's that you say? Danny isn't in the finale? Oh.....um...excuse me, I was slightly delusional there for a second! Yes, that's right - it's Kris Allen in the finale. The man who I once called a Muppet (well, on several occasions, actually...). I fell asleep to a few of his performances this year. Alas, I'm so sick of Adam-mania that I'm going to pull for the young man named Kris (that's with a K, thank you very much). And you know what? He's really not that bad. I cut him up pretty bad at times, but then I also gave him "mad props" at other times. Especially when he sang a brilliant version of "Ain't No Sunshine" earlier this season. Go back and look it up - I loved that version (and I generally know, I know, I know, I know I don't really like that original too much...I know).

So, Adam vs Kris. Let's get this party started. Adam Lambert is up first (he lost the coin toss to Kris and Kris deferred to go second) with his version of "Mad World" by Tears for Fears. I think this got cut off originally on my DVR, so I never saw it live. Adam comes up from the under the stage and walks through the smoke with a long coat on...and dry ice. OMG, the producers are going all out to give Adam fans what they want. You know, this song gets stuck in my head but I think that's because it's a good Tears for Fears song. I'm actually a little bored by this version of the song - he definitely has moments where you say, yeah, he's good. But overall, I think he's set Kris up for a first round victory. I think Adam did the smart thing because most people loved this when he did it originally. And I will give him credit in not going off the rails in his typical Sam Harris fashion. So good job, but I'm not going "gaga" over this. But here come the judges...they'll freakin' LOVE this (because they did in the past). So Randy gives him an A+, Kara over emotes her response (god she has gotten annoying as the season has worn on), Paula looks like she's had a face lift or a tan or both - oh, and she loves Adam and says he was brilliant, and Simon...well, Simon said it was a little over theatrical tonight. Good call Simon! Said it reminded him of Phantom of the Opera (Randy yells "Twilight! Twilight!!!").

Kris Allen counters with "Ain't No Sunshine" - hey, that's MY choice for him too!!! I know you may say I'm biased, but Kris does a great job with this version. It's even better than last time, I think. I would actually buy this song if I could (don't tell me it's on iTunes, because I already bought Idol songs last year from Carly Smithson and I never listen to them, so I'm not going there...) Seriously, this is a passionate, well sung performance that proves that Kris really does deserve to be here. I would have preferred Danny vs Kris, actually, but I'm not bitter. Anyway, other than a lame final note (did the same thing last time), I thought Kris was brilliant with this version. Kick ass buddy!! Randy (who is looking dapper in a suit and tie!) talks about Basketball (huh????) and then said it was one of his best performances EVER on the stage...nice close up of Kris' wife...then Kara goes crazy telling Kris how much she loves him...wow. It's very Paula like, except Kara can speak. Paula calls him a great artist. Simon said that song proves that he deserves to be there in the final. Simon gives round one to Kris! Woo hoo!!

After some commercials, we come back to Ryan walking through the celebrity filled audience, and he tells us the next songs were picked by Idol producer Simon Fuller. First up is Adam with Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come". I'll give Adam credit for this one - he does a very good to great job. Yes, he goes off the rails at times, but generally, he's actually quite controlled during a good part of this, especially at the beginning. He is also on stage with a suit, and looks the part of a star. He doesn't have any smoke or long coats or any of that crap. Very well done - and it restores my faith that Adam can actually perform pretty well when we stops believing his own hype. I mean, there are times he goes so overboard he pulls out a Sam Harris moment from Star Search, but overall, I don't mind it on this song. It's the kind of song that is supposed to build and build and he does a very good job. Congrats Adam... The judges? Randy said he can sing his face off, and it was unbelievable. Kara said it was the best performance he's ever done. She noted that he used both sides - controlled and upper range. Paula said it was the best ever...ever....ever....and that he looks like a superstar. She says he'll be ICONIC. Wow. Simon said Adam is back in the game.

So Kris better come back strong, because it will be tough to top Adam's last song. Simon Fuller picks "What's Going On" by the late, great Marvin Gaye. It's just Kris up there with his guitar, along with 3 other band members. It's a funky, stripped down version of the song. I really love this version - it's different from the original, and yet, very Kris Allen-esque. I haven't always liked what he's done with popular songs (see "All She Wants to Do Is Dance"), but I think he hit this one out of the park. I would probably call this a draw - maybe from an energy standpoint, I'd give a slight edge to Adam. But not much - I think this was great!! Randy said it didn't have enough energy for him (what!?!?). Kara said it was a great choice by Simon Fuller - because it was socially conscious...oh kayyyyyyyyy....Paula said he did Marvin Gaye proud (thank you very much Paula!). Simon said it was like listening to 3 friends in his bedroom strumming some Marvin Gaye, and it was too laid back and that Kris didn't make it his own. You, Simon, are an IDIOT for this comment. Are you kidding me? Didn't make it his own? Too laid back? That's Kris' style, and he definitely made it his own. Go listen to the original, then listen to Kris' version and tell me they are not different. That's totally Kris' style...I can't believe Simon said this! I'm steaming at this point...he just wanted to even this up, and I'd call this round a draw, with possibly a slight edge to Adam. But very very close. In fact, screw it - I'm downloading some Kris Allen tomorrow on iTunes. I don't care what anyone says.

Shocker - Simon gave this round to Adam. "Million Percent Adam..." Yeah, sure Simon...it was SOOOOOOO much better. Get your head out of your behind, Cowell.

OK, so the final song will be the "signature" original song for whoever wins. And that means it's going to be cheesy and horrible. It has to be. We come back from the commercial with all the "Idols" from this season (sans Adam and Kris, natch...but there is my girl Alexis! I miss her!!!!)...and we're informed that this song, "No Boundaries", was co-written by Kara. Isn't "No Boundaries" a tagline for Ford?? Anyway, Adam sings this putrid song - which by the way, contains the words "Mountain", "Hurricane", "Pain", "Dreams", "Higher", "Deeper"....OMG - this is just a horrible song, and Adam doesn't do it any favors. He looks constipated during the entire thing. I hate this song, but I can't blame Adam. He can't help it if Kara served up a giant turd of a song. Ugh....please, let the song end...wow, this really will be on the album of the winner?? I feel sorry for that person! I used to like Kara. Wow... Randy has the balls to stand up and say he didn't care for the song (take THAT Kara!!!). But he says Adam is a superstar - he can sing the phone book. A little pitchy in spots, though. Kara name drops her co-writers. She was moved and proud, and Adam has the audacity to thank Kara for giving him that song - it was "beautiful", according to Mr. Lambert. Yeah...no it wasn't. Adam, stop the brown nosing. America loves you and you're going to win tomorrow night. You don't need this. Tell Kara next time, please leave out the main ingredient of 100% American Cheese and just write a good song. Puhleez!! Paula said she'll be a fan forever (she never actually says anything about the song!). Simon says, "I'm not going to judge that song, I"m going to judge you..." He said Adam is one of the most original artist ever on Idol. He believes he's found the next star in Adam.

Now it's Kris' turn to sing "No Boundaries". Kris sounds like he's sleeping during the first part of this performance. I don't like his version either. It's still the same crappy song. I don't think either of them did anything with this song, but it's not their fault. Kris sounds like he's really straining during this song. Wow, it sounds awful at times. But again, I'm not knocking Kris. Adam's version sounds better, but that's not saying much. This type of song lends itself to Adam's bombast, so in some ways, I think he wins round 3 over Kris. But none of this matters - Kris can't possibly beat King Adam, but he did himself proud tonight. Randy says exactly what I just said - Kris did an amazing job this season. Kara says she doesn't want him judged on her song (ha! That's because it's CRAP Kara!) She congratulated him on a great season, and hoped people voted for the entire season. Paula said it was a compelling finale, and he deserves where he is in the spotlight. Simon said Kris' best song was his first song, and he's come a long way from the beginning of the show. Simon said he deserves to be on that stage tonight.

So who won? Well, I personally think Kris was better tonight (especially on his first song), but I also thought Adam did a very nice job with his second song. The third song was a wash. I think Adam has this in the bag, but I also wouldn't be totally shocked if Kris ends up winning because he DOES have a big fan base (you need to in order to get to the finale). But if I was a betting man, I'd put my money on Adam being season 8's winner. Regardless of what happens, both Adam and Kris will more than likely BOTH have record deals, and I'll more than likely NOT buy either of them. Because I rarely do (exceptions - Clarkson/Underwood/Daughtry). Speaking of Carrie Underwood, she comes out to sing her version of the Motley Crue 80's classic "Home Sweet Home" (where is Vince Neil when you need him?? Can you imagine a duet?!). My DVR gets cut off, but that's OK because I was taping "Glee" anyway, so it's all good.

Tune in tomorrow for the big finale - I'm sure there will be a lot of fun, surprises and time wasted on a TWO HOUR finale. Ugh...I'll watch it of course, but I'll probably just fast forward through a lot of it. And no Lost tomorrow...oy vey...what am I to do?? :^) Thanks for reading my Idol Blog this season.
